For many of us, Starbucks holds a special place in our memories, often intertwined with youthful adventures and changing tastes. When I reflect on my teenage years, Starbucks immediately comes to mind. While a part of me might playfully cringe at the memory of that awkward, sometimes uncertain young lady, there’s an undeniable warmth of nostalgia that floods back. Starbucks was the epitome of cool back then. A trek to the local bookstore, followed by a Frappuccino with “extra drizzle” and a mountain of whipped cream, was enough to send a teenage girl into pure bliss. Over the years, my palate has certainly matured. Now, I often prefer a good French press coffee with just a splash of cream. Yet, those fleeting moments of sweet nostalgia still arrive, and it’s then that I yearn for a big, refreshing sip of something wonderfully sweet and delicious, without the added caffeine or the wait.
This homemade Instant Pot Passion Tea Lemonade offers the perfect blend of indulgence and sophistication. It bridges the gap between the rich, sweet treats of my Starbucks past and my current desire for a more balanced, refreshing, and custom-made beverage. It’s a way to recapture that delightful flavor without compromising on convenience or my grown-up preferences.

I’m excited to show you just how effortlessly you can prepare this yummy Instant Pot Passion Tea Lemonade. Let’s dive in and get started!
Essential Ingredients for Your Starbucks Copycat

Creating this vibrant and delicious Passion Tea Lemonade at home requires just a handful of simple, high-quality ingredients. Each component plays a crucial role in replicating that distinctive Starbucks flavor:
- Passion Tea Bags: The heart of this recipe! You simply cannot have Passion Tea Lemonade without the iconic passion tea itself. We highly recommend using Tazo Passion Tea bags, which are known for their distinct, vibrant, and fruity hibiscus flavor profile. This particular brand was historically used by Starbucks, making it the perfect choice for an authentic copycat. Tazo Passion Tea can sometimes be a bit tricky to find in all local grocery stores, but thankfully, you can conveniently pick it up on Amazon if your local store doesn’t carry it.
- Fresh Lemons: While many other homemade Passion Tea Lemonade recipes might suggest using store-bought lemonade for convenience, we prefer to take a fresher, more authentic approach. By including fresh lemons, we build the “lemonade” component from scratch, ensuring a brighter, more natural tartness. This means we’ll be using freshly squeezed lemon juice, which truly makes all the difference in flavor. If you’re short on time, bottled lemon juice can work in a pinch, but for the best taste, go for fresh!
- Granulated Sugar: To balance the tartness of the lemon and enhance the fruity notes of the passion tea, white granulated sugar is perfectly suited for this recipe. The hot water in the Instant Pot will effortlessly dissolve the sugar, creating a smooth and perfectly sweetened base for your drink.
- Vanilla Extract: This might seem like an unexpected ingredient, but just a touch of good quality vanilla extract adds a subtle depth and smoothness to the overall flavor profile. It helps to round out the tart and sweet notes, creating a more complex and satisfying beverage, much like the subtle nuances you’d find in a professionally crafted drink.
- You will also need 4 ¾ cups of drinkable quality cold water, divided, to perfectly steep your tea and mix your lemonade.

Step-by-Step Instructions: Making Your Passion Tea Lemonade
Making your very own Starbucks-inspired Passion Tea Lemonade at home is incredibly simple when you harness the power of your Instant Pot. This method is not only fast but also ensures consistent results every time. Whether you’re preparing a personal serving or a large batch for a summer BBQ or potluck, you can easily double, triple, or even quadruple the recipe to fit your needs.

Getting Started with Your Instant Pot
Begin by adding 2 cups of the specified cold water to the inner pot of your Instant Pot. This quantity works perfectly for both 6-quart and 8-quart models. While I haven’t specifically tested it in a 3-quart Instant Pot, this amount should safely fall below the maximum fill line, so it should work just fine! Next, add the granulated sugar to the water. Whisk these two ingredients together thoroughly until the sugar is well dissolved. This ensures a perfectly sweetened base for your tea.
Once the sugar is dissolved, securely place the lid on your Instant Pot and turn the valve to the “sealing” position. You have two options for heating: you can either use the “yogurt” setting and select “boil,” or you can set the pot to manual high pressure for 4 minutes. I personally prefer the manual pressure setting because it yields hotter water (which I’ve confirmed through testing), allowing the tea to steep more effectively and extract maximum flavor. However, either option will successfully bring your water to the required temperature for steeping.

Steeping for Optimal Flavor
Once your Instant Pot emits its cheerful beep to signal that the cooking time is complete, it’s time to release the pressure. Carefully turn off the Instant Pot and then meticulously move the valve to the “venting” position. Stand clear as the steam releases rapidly. Once all the steam has been safely expelled, the floating pin will drop, indicating that it is safe to carefully remove the Instant Pot lid. Be sure to exercise caution when handling the hot lid.
Immediately after opening, add the passion tea bags to the Instant Pot. Use a metal spoon to gently press them down, ensuring they are fully submerged in the hot, sweetened water. Allow the tea bags to steep for a full 15 minutes. This steeping time is crucial for extracting the vibrant color and full, fruity flavor of the passion tea, which is essential for our Starbucks copycat.

Flavoring and Chilling
After the 15-minute steeping time has elapsed, it’s time to remove the tea bags. Using a pair of metal tongs, carefully retrieve each tea bag. I always recommend gently squeezing out any remaining liquid from the bags before discarding them to capture every last drop of that delicious passion tea essence. This small step ensures maximum flavor in your final beverage!
Next, add the remaining cold water (which is 2 ¾ cups) to the Instant Pot and stir everything together well. This cold water helps to bring the temperature down and prevent the lemon juice from cooking. It’s important to test the temperature of the water at this point to ensure it’s around room temperature. A clean finger or a clean spoon works perfectly for this quick check. If the water is still warmer than room temperature, allow it to cool for an additional 15-30 minutes before proceeding to the next step. This is vital to prevent the lemon juice from tasting bitter or losing its fresh zest.
Once the tea mixture is sufficiently cool, add the freshly squeezed lemon juice (approximately 3 tablespoons). Stir or whisk thoroughly to combine the lemon juice evenly throughout the tea. Finally, add the vanilla extract. Stir one last time to integrate the vanilla, which adds a beautiful subtle depth to the lemonade.
Carefully transfer the finished tea lemonade to a clean glass pitcher or a half-gallon sized jar. Cover it securely with an airtight lid and place it in the refrigerator. Allow it to chill completely for several hours, or even better, overnight. This chilling process allows the flavors to meld beautifully and ensures a truly refreshing drink.

Serving Your Perfect Passion Tea Lemonade
Once your Instant Pot Passion Tea Lemonade is thoroughly chilled, it’s ready to be served! Pour generously over a tall glass filled with ice cubes. For an extra touch of elegance and a burst of fresh aroma, garnish each serving with a vibrant lemon wedge, a few fresh mint leaves, or even some fresh berries like raspberries or blackberries. These additions not only make the drink look more appealing but also enhance the refreshing experience. Enjoy this delightful and satisfying homemade treat!
*A note on temperature: If, for any reason, the tea mixture is warmer than room temperature after adding the remaining cold water, please allow it to cool down for at least 30 minutes or until it reaches room temperature before incorporating the lemon juice. In my experience, this rarely happens, as long as you add very cool water to the pot, your tea should cool down sufficiently quite quickly. This step is important to maintain the bright, fresh flavor of the lemon and prevent any bitterness.

Smart Substitutions for Dietary Needs
This Instant Pot Passion Tea Lemonade recipe is wonderfully adaptable, making it suitable for various dietary preferences without compromising on flavor:
- Low Carb / Keto / Diabetic / Sugar-Free: If you’re following a low-carb, keto, or sugar-free diet, or if you need to manage your sugar intake for diabetic reasons, you can easily substitute the regular granulated sugar. Simply swap it out for a cup-for-cup granular sweetener like Swerve or Lakanto Monk Fruit Sweetener. These alternatives dissolve just as easily in hot water and provide the sweetness without the added carbs or sugar.
Exciting Flavor Variations to Try
While the classic Passion Tea Lemonade is a beloved favorite, this recipe serves as a fantastic base for exploring other delightful tea lemonade combinations. Feel free to experiment with different tea bags to create your own signature beverages:
- Green Tea Lemonade: For a slightly more earthy and subtly bitter note, simply replace the passion tea bags with your favorite green tea bags. This variation offers a more traditional tea flavor that pairs beautifully with the zesty lemon.
- Acai Berry Lemonade: If you’re looking for an extra boost of fruity flavor and a gorgeous purple hue, swap out the passion tea bags for Acai Berry tea bags. This creates a deeply flavorful and antioxidant-rich lemonade that’s both delicious and visually appealing.
- Meyer Lemonade: For a unique twist with a sweeter, less acidic lemon flavor, try this sophisticated variation. Replace the passion tea bags with Meyer lemon tea bags, and critically, replace the regular lemon juice with the juice from fresh Meyer lemons. Meyer lemons are a cross between a lemon and a mandarin orange, offering a distinct floral sweetness. You may also want to increase the sugar slightly to enhance their natural sweetness further.

Frequently Asked Questions About Instant Pot Passion Tea Lemonade
Great news for those sensitive to caffeine! Since passion tea is an herbal tea, it is naturally free from caffeine. This means that your delicious Passion Tea Lemonade, which uses Passion Tea as its base, is also completely caffeine-free. You can enjoy it at any time of day or night without worrying about it affecting your sleep or causing jitters.
Starbucks initially did use Tazo tea after acquiring the brand in 1999, which is why Tazo Passion Tea is perfect for a copycat recipe. However, Tazo has since been sold to Unilever. Starbucks has since transitioned to using their “Teavana” brand for their tea offerings. Despite this change, Tazo still delivers that classic Starbucks-inspired taste for many of their original tea drinks and remains easily accessible to those who choose to craft their favorite beverages at home.
If you simply steep passion tea bags in plain water, the resulting herbal tea is indeed keto-friendly. Any minute amounts of natural sugars that might leach from the tea ingredients into the water would be negligible. However, if your goal is to transform that passion tea into a Passion Tea Lemonade, you must be mindful of the added sweeteners. To keep your lemonade keto-compliant, be sure to use a keto-approved sweetener, such as erythritol, stevia, or monk fruit sweetener, instead of traditional granulated sugar.
Absolutely! While the Instant Pot offers convenience and speed, you can certainly make this refreshing Passion Tea Lemonade without one. Instead of using the Instant Pot, simply boil 2 cups of water in a regular pot on the stovetop. Once boiling, whisk in the sugar until it’s fully dissolved. Then, add the tea bags, let them steep for the recommended 15 minutes, and proceed with the rest of the recipe as instructed (adding the remaining cold water, lemon juice, and vanilla). The Instant Pot just makes the initial heating and steeping process a bit more hands-off and cleanup easier, but the delicious end result is achievable either way!
